ERNiCrFe-2 Welding Wire knowledge

  • Best ERNiCrFe-2 Welding Wire Requirements

Based on AWS A5.14 specifications and manufacturer data, the best ERNiCrFe-2 welding wire requirements are defined by its chemical composition, mechanical properties, and quality conformance.

Minimum Tensile Strength: The weld metal must achieve at least 550 MPa (80 ksi).

    Minimum Elongation: ≥ 30% in 2 inches (51mm).

Typical Applications: The wire is specified for welding high-strength Inconel alloys 718, 706, and X-750, often in demanding sectors such as aerospace and power generation.

  • ERNiCrFe-2 Welding Wire Identification

"NiCrFe" Designation: This core of the name indicates the primary composition family: a Nickel-Chromium-Iron alloy.

Spooled Wire: Typically on spools in diameters from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm, designed for automated or semi-automatic welding (MIG/GMAW).

Straight Rods: Available as cut-to-length rods from 1.2 mm to 3.2 mm, intended for manual TIG welding (GTAW).

ASME SFA-A5.14: An additional certification often required for pressure vessel and nuclear applications.

Traceable Test Reports: Manufacturers typically provide "mill test reports" or certificates showing the actual wire composition, which can be used to verify its identity against the standard.

  •  ERNiCrFe-2 Welding Wire Packaging

ERNiCrFe-2 welding wire is available in packaging specifically designed to protect the material and suit different welding processes. The main forms are spooled wire for MIG (GMAW) welding and cut-length rods for TIG (GTAW) welding.

    (1) Spooled WireMIG/GMAW welding Typically 12.5 kg (approx. 27.6 lbs) or 15 kg per spool

    (2) Cut-Length RodsTIG/GTAW welding Usually packaged in boxes of 5 kg

How to choose a suitable ERNiCrFe-2 Welding Wire?or what type of filler wire is best for ERNiCrFe-2 Welding Wire?

Matching High-Strength Alloys: It is specifically designed for welding high-strength, precipitation-hardenable nickel alloys. Its primary and best use is for welding base metals like Inconel 718, Inconel 706, and X-750. Its composition (with elements like Nb, Ti, and Al) is formulated to provide the strength needed to match these alloys.

Ultra-High Strength is Required: The filler metal is chosen to achieve high weld metal strength, especially when the welded assembly will undergo a post-weld aging heat treatment. Typical weld metal tensile strength requirements start at a minimum of 550 MPa, with some products listing a much higher minimum of 1138 MPa (165,000 psi).

Welding Dissimilar Metals for High-Temperature Service: ENiCrFe-2 is an excellent choice for welding dissimilar joints, particularly between chrome-moly (Cr/Mo) steels and stainless steels. This is especially true if the joint will be exposed to cyclic thermal loads and service temperatures above ~700°F (371°C). The nickel-based weld metal acts as a "hinge" to absorb thermal expansion stress and better resists carbon migration, a common issue in high-temp dissimilar welds.

Chemical Composition: Always verify the wire meets the AWS A5.14 specification for ERNiCrFe-2. Key elements include Nickel (50.0-55.0%), Chromium (17.0-21.0%), Niobium+Tantalum (4.75-5.50%), and Molybdenum (2.80-3.30%), with low limits on Carbon, Silicon, and Manganese.

Certification: For critical applications (e.g., pressure vessels, nuclear), require conformance to ASME SFA-A5.14 and request mill test reports or certificates of actual wire chemistry to ensure traceability and quality.

Welding dissimilar Cr/Mo to stainless steel with high service temp (>700°F) and thermal cycling.ERNiCrFe-2Minimizes thermal stress and

carbon migration issues.

Welding Inconel 600, 601, or 800 series alloys.ERNiCr-3More appropriate alloy match with lower risk of cracking.

ERNiCrFe-2 Welding Wire Use

ERNiCrFe-2 welding wire has several direct equivalent grades and similar products, both under the AWS specification and from other international standards and manufacturers. These include:

AWS A5.14 ERNiFeCr-2 (UNS N07718): This is the primary, direct classification for this welding wire. It is essentially the same product under a slightly different naming convention within the AWS A5.14 specification.

ASME SFA-5.14 ERNiFeCr-2: This is the equivalent classification recognized by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ensuring its suitability for pressure vessel applications.

AMS 5832: This is the Aerospace Material Specification number for this filler metal, confirming its use in critical aerospace components.

ENiCrFe-3Contains significantly more Manganese (5.0-9.5% vs. 1.0-3.5%), making it less prone to microfissures. However, it has a lower maximum service

temperature (900°F vs. 1500°F).Similar applications, especially where weld cracking is a concern, but at lower operating temperatures.

ENiCrFe-7Designed for welding INCONEL 690 alloy. Has a much higher Chromium content (28.0-31.5%) for exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Welding INCONEL 690 and other applications requiring superior corrosion resistance.

ERNiCrMo-3A Ni-Cr-Mo alloy (like INCONEL 625) used for welding similar alloys, often chosen for its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength across

a wide temperature range.High-strength, high-corrosion-resistance applications and dissimilar welding.

UTP 7015 Mo: A stick electrode from voestalpine Böhler Welding that meets the AWS ENiCrFe-2 classification.

Ni357: A common grade designation for this filler metal in the Chinese (GB/T) standard.

DIN EL-NiCr16FeMn: The equivalent classification under the German (DIN) standard.

ERNiCrFe-2 Welding Wire Classification. Electrodes of this classification are self-shielded, operate on DCEN, and have a smooth spray-type transfer. They are general purpose electrodes for single- and multiple-pass welding

in all positions. Their use is generally not recommended on thicknesses greater than 3/4 in [19 mm]. The electrode manufacturer should be consulted for specific recommendations.
